Pancake House

It looks like burgers is the official flavor of the month for the blog! A few weeks ago, we went out to eat lunch at Pancake House in Makati Avenue. I’ve eaten here several times already, usually getting their breakfast meals and of course – pancakes. Since it’s unofficially burger month, I was also able to try their House Jumbo Burger. Here’s a picture of that particular dish.

I think the main question we have to answer in this review is if Pancake house has more to offer than just pancakes. I’ll tackle 3-4 non-pancake dishes in this review. Read more about it after the jump.

Let’s start with the Pancake House Jumbo Burger. I can’t exactly recall the price but it was around the P220 – P240 range. Their main selling point here is that the burger is supposed to be big. In all honesty the burger actually tasted really nice. The meat was just cooked okay and the quality of the fries that comes with the dish was also decent. However I think paying more than P200 for it was too much. I mean, I can add like P20 and go get a Burger Avenue Ridiculous Burger right? Ric Laig, our Chief Financial Officer here at Level Up, also tasted the burger shared the same sentiments.

Moving on, let me talk about one of my favorite non-pancake dishes here. Their Tinapa with Egg is really fantastic. The serving is generous and they cook the fish perfectly. I can’t eat this dish without ordering extra rice. Note that the siding also tastes good. It’s like an extra viand since it goes well with the garlic rice. Only problem is that this is rather priced a bit high at P180.

I’ve also tasted their steak, roast beef, pan chicken, and tacos. The steak is okay, nothing special. It can’t really compared to Tender Bob’s but the price is just the same. The Roast Beef, on the other hand, used to be my eternal favorite here until I found the Tinapa meal. I’ve heard some people complain that it was dry now but I can’t confirm that since I haven’t ordered it in a long while. About the Pan Chicken, a lot of people claim that it’s one of the best rice dishes being offered by Pancake House. I beg to disagree. I hate the taste and I would rather eat home-cooked fried chicken then spend for this particular dish.

SUMMARY

Rating Card
1 – Waste of money
2 – Satisfactory – just okay. Nothing special
3 – Wow, something to remember.
4 – OMGWTFBBQ I WANT MOREZZ PLZZ

FOOD QUALITY: 3
DISH PRICES VS QUALITY: 1
CUSTOMER SERVICE: 2
RESTAURANT CLEANLINESS: 3
RESTAURANT OVER-ALL RATING: 2.25

So the answer to my first question? Well, yes… and no. I find Pancake House too expensive, especially for all of the dishes outside the pancake world. Don’t get me wrong, I love their pancakes and I think they’re reasonably priced given the quality. But I find everything else too steep and the quality plus over-all dining experience doesn’t justify the cost.

Too expensive and small servings make a second visit to any restaurant unlikely. That’s what happened with me and Pancake House.

One morning my Dad, Sister and I, went to Blue Wave Mall, Marikina for breakfast. We had a choice between KFC, Jollibee and Pancake House. My Dad said “Dito naman. Hinde pa tayo kumakain dito” and we ended up in Pancake House. Right after we got seated a waiter gave us menus. My Dad almost bolted for the door when he saw the prices on the menu but pride and “hiya” got the better of him. My Dad ordered a Pancake Stack, I ordered a Sausage Platter, and my Sister ordered a salad (I think? I’m not sure, but anyway). It took 30 minutes for our orders to arrive. When we finally got our order I whispered to my Dad, “Ito lang ba?” My sausage platter felt like a sausage “platito.” It had four tiny balls of sausage, smaller than Ping-Pong balls, and two almost raw sunny-side-up eggs. I returned the platter and asked for cooked eggs. It took 10 more minutes before my plate returned. My dad liked the pancakes fine but complained about the coffee they serve with it. My guess is he’s not used to brewed coffee. My sister, as she often does, takes some of my food, making my Sausage Platter that smaller. The final blow came when we billed out. As expensive as the prices on the menus are they weren’t tax inclusive plus they add a 10% service charge on top of the total. Dad paid, we left and never returned.

Food tasted great but servings are too stingy and considering the price, Pancake House definitely deserves a one (1) on DISH PRICES VS QUALITY.

For Burgers, Please have a try in Charlie’s Burger and Grill. The place is quite hidden, it’s beside a carwash in kapitolyo Pasig near the “Three Sisters” resto. Their Beef Angus burger sells for 175 pesos, Just add 20 to have fresh fries on the sides. I personally think that they’re good but It’s interesting to know what you think. I hope you can consider. :)

I checked out your blog just to see if there’s any good reviews about Pancake House..I guess not. I really don’t care about this restaurant except for the occassional pan chicken cravings… I say it is a fast food resto masquerading as a fine dining place. Great food, really.. I especially like the salad with smoked tanguigue.. I even am very curious about theis baby back ribs.. and the burger… But with their prices, I sure can live many years without ever tasting their offerings…
